To celebrate Duolingo’s 10th birthday and show that the Duolingo owl really can pop up anywhere, we launched a multiplatform takeover of the metaverse (whatever that is). Embracing the popularity and meme-ification of the language app's Duo the owl mascot, we hosted a community-driven game jam. We gave Roblox creators a custom asset pack with all the necessary tools and models to develop their own Duo-inspired games. the resulting games were featured in a custom Duolingo Hub world. The hub included a shop full of fun Duolingo merch, a museum, a taqueria, an interactive Duo birthday card and a ‘Spanish or Vanish’ game that tested players’ language skills, as they dodged Duo in a multilevel maze. In a separate experience, we brought Duo to Decentraland with a giant snarky statue and an avatar that chased, pestered and posed for selfies. With 23M+ visits and 20+ fan-made games, we increased Duolingo's presence in the metaverse — motivating language lovers to keep learning.
